INTERNATIONAL STYLE
The Modernist, International style of architecture was first developed in the 1920s and 30s, and became the dominant tender in Western architecture as time progressed. The word ‘modern’ evokes a particular style that is defined by a set of principles. These include, an honesty to materials, simplicity to the core, clean and crisp lines, and less is more. Melbourne buildings that have been developed in the 1930s and 50s adhere to the style’s characteristics, and do not seem out of place in the modern-day world. These buildings are rectilinear forms, with plain surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation and decoration. Nothing more than glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Materials that create a visually weightless quality to its construction. The International style does not reflect time period, as its design solely focuses on function, and function will be a necessity for the forever changing environment.
