THE CITY BY THE BAY
It is often thought that the aim for photography is to capture reality. In some circumstances yes, but in most, it is for us to capture our own ideas and perception. We all experience reality differently, and see the world from a different perspective. This does not change the reality of the world as all of our perceptions are unique.
Melbourne, this city by the bay is so incredibly unique. It’s structured in a grid like formation that is consistent and balanced. It always seems buzzing and yet has a sense of being calm, relaxed and never feeling rushed. One small individual in a big city, I personally always see myself looking up, where the tops of buildings intersect with the sky. It’s a sight I can imagine most individuals can relate to, and the city of Melbourne never seems to disappoint.
This city has the ability to combine both old and new, combining heritage with modernism, which makes it something uniquely special. Melbourne is able place older architectural styles such as Parliament House, with newer modern icons such as the Art Centre, and yet still feels connected as one.
My own perspective explored this idea around viewpoint, details and specifics. These famous structures of Melbourne are often viewed in a rather wide angled frame, with context from surrounding buildings and environments. I wanted to zoom in on the details, focusing solely on shapes and angles, isolating a specific building. Isolation allows the focus to only be on whatever is in the frame, the architecture, and nothing else. This series takes on a perspective that the everyday person may not think about when walking through the streets of Melbourne.
